Types of Subject in a Sentence

Subject = The person/thing "about whom" the sentence is talking. It does the action of the verb.

1. Simple Subject - Single Noun or Pronoun

1. Riya sings well.
2. Birds fly in the sky.
3. He is my brother.
4. Sun rises in the east.
5. Water boils at 100°C.
6. She loves music.
7. Children play cricket.
8. Rain falls from clouds.
9. I study daily.
10. Teacher explains clearly.
11. Dogs bark loudly.
12. Time waits for none.
13. We live in Delhi.
14. Honesty is the best policy.
15. They are happy.

2. Compound Subject - 2 or more subjects joined by and/or

1. Rahul and Sita are dancing.
2. My mother and father love me.
3. Cats and dogs are pets.
4. He or she will win the prize.
5. Pen, pencil and eraser are on the table.
6. Riya, Amit and I are friends.
7. Rice and dal is my favorite food.
8. Either Ram or Shyam will come.
9. The teacher and students went to picnic.
10. Bread and butter is good for breakfast.
11. You and your sister sing beautifully.
12. Delhi and Mumbai are big cities.
13. My brother and I play football.
14. Sun and moon give us light.
15. Honesty and hard work lead to success.

3. Pronoun Subject - I, You, He, She, It, We, They

1. I am reading a book.
2. You are very kind.
3. He works in a bank.
4. She sings sweetly.
5. It rains heavily today.
6. We play cricket daily.
7. They live in Mumbai.
8. This is my pen.
9. That was a good movie.
10. These are fresh flowers.
11. Those belong to my uncle.

13. Someone is knocking at the door.
14. Everybody wants success.
15. Nothing is impossible.

4. Gerund Subject - Verb + ing used as noun

1. Swimming is good exercise.
2. Reading improves knowledge.
3. Dancing makes me happy.
4. Walking keeps us fit.
5. Smoking is injurious to health.
6. Learning never stops.
7. Teaching is a noble profession.
8. Playing builds team spirit.
9. Cooking is her hobby.

12. Helping others gives peace.
13. Eating too much is bad.
14. Writing needs patience.
15. Speaking English daily helps.

5. Infinitive Subject - To + Verb

1. To err is human.
2. To speak truth is difficult.
3. To win the match was our goal.
4. To help others is a virtue.
5. To study regularly brings success.
6. To travel the world is my dream.
7. To forgive is divine.
8. To obey elders is good.
9. To learn new things is exciting.
10. To wake up early is healthy.
