  4. Filtration method is used to remove insoluble impurities from water.
  5. The cooler air that moves from land towards sea during night is called land breeze.

B. Fill in the blanks.

  1. The thing that occupies space and has mass is called matter.
  2. Solids, liquids and gases are the states of matter.
  3. Liquids take up the shape of the container they are poured into.
  4. The separation of insoluble particles using filter paper is called filtration.

  3. The process of pouring the clear liquids from top of the sediment. Decantation
  4. Removing insoluble solids by passing through filter paper. Filtration
  5. The method in which solution is heated till all the water evaporates. Boiling / Evaporation

F. Long Answer Questions

1. What is matter? Name the states of matter.
Ans: Anything that has mass and occupies space is called matter.
The three states of matter are: Solid, Liquid and Gas.

2. List the properties of liquid.
Ans: 1. No fixed shape, take container's shape
2. Have fixed volume
3. Flow from higher to lower level
4. Particles are loosely packed

3. How can you separate insoluble substances from a solution?
Ans: By sedimentation, decantation and filtration. In sedimentation solids settle down, in decantation clean liquid is poured out, and in filtration mixture is passed through filter paper.

4. Give reasons-
i. Solids are hard and rigid. Ans: Because particles in solids are tightly packed.
ii. Particles of gases move in all possible directions. Ans: Because particles in gases are very loosely packed with lot of vacant space.

5. Define solution, solute and solvent with example.
Ans: Solution: Mixture where substances evenly mix. Eg: Sugar syrup
Solute: Substance dissolved. Eg: Sugar
Solvent: Substance in which dissolved. Eg: Water

6. What is land breeze? How is it different from sea breeze?
Ans: Land breeze occurs at night when cool air from land moves to sea.
Sea breeze occurs in daytime when cool air from sea moves to land.

7. How can you separate soluble substances from a solution?
Ans: By boiling/evaporation or distillation. Heating evaporates water leaving solid behind.

8. Explain the role of ventilators in closed spaces.
Ans: Ventilators let warm air, unwanted and foul smell escape. Cool air comes in, keeping room fresh and cool.
